Conservation strategy · Operational advisory

Stronger conservation systems, grounded in operational reality.

Wildlife Angel International helps protected-area authorities and conservation organisations understand how strategy, governance, command, information, resources and field operations interact — and where change can produce real results.

Positioning

From field experience to institutional capacity.

Base
Paris, France
Scope
International
Method
Context-specific

Training matters. It is not enough.

A capable ranger can still be constrained by unclear doctrine, fragmented command, poorly allocated resources or information that never reaches decision-makers. Improving one part of a system does not automatically improve the system itself.

WAI starts from the field and works back through the organisational mechanisms that shape what can actually be achieved.

What we do

Understand the whole system before prescribing change.

01

Institutional and operational audits

Strategy, governance, command, personnel, infrastructure, logistics, information and field operations examined as one system.

02

Strategy and organisational design

Clear priorities, realistic concepts of employment, defined responsibilities and resources aligned with threats and objectives.

03

Operational capacity and interoperability

Coordination between sectors, mobile units, air assets, intelligence, control rooms and leadership — designed for the realities of each territory.

04

Evaluation and organisational learning

Indicators, after-action reviews and programme evaluation that distinguish activity from lasting capacity and measurable results.

Our approach

Evidence, proportion and transfer of capacity.

No universal model. No technology in search of a problem. No catalogue of recommendations detached from the organisation’s ability to act.

  1. Field before theoryModels must survive contact with local realities.
  2. Results before activityWhat changed matters more than what was delivered.
  3. Proportion over complexityThe simplest adequate solution is often the most durable.
  4. Transfer, not dependenceA strengthened institution should be able to continue without us.

Who we are

Two complementary perspectives, one shared requirement.

Wildlife Angel International was founded by Sergio Lopez and Joël Schuermans to connect institutional strategy with field realities and turn experience into lasting organisational capacity.

Co-founder — Conservation strategy and institutional development

Sergio Lopez

Sergio Lopez specialises in conservation strategy, environmental crime and capacity development. Founder of Wildlife Angel, he has spent more than twelve years supporting institutions and protected-area managers, primarily in Africa, as they professionalise their operational and institutional systems.

His work connects risk analysis, governance, operational organisation and responses to environmental crime. A member of the Executive Committee of the French Committee of the IUCN, he develops approaches within Wildlife Angel International designed to strengthen the resilience and long-term viability of conservation systems facing security, human, financial and environmental pressures.

Co-founder — Operations, training and capacity development

Joël Schuermans

Joël Schuermans specialises in field operations, training and capacity development in remote or degraded environments.

His background combines more than twelve years as a team leader in operational units, advanced training in remote-area medicine, and the design of doctrine and training systems. He has conducted numerous international missions and led Wildlife Angel France’s operations against wildlife crime.

The author of numerous books and several operational field guides, he works to turn field experience into methods that are transferable, realistic and suited to organisations. Within Wildlife Angel International, he focuses on operational assessments, unit organisation, interoperability, risk management and lessons learned, with particular attention to the lasting autonomy of local teams.

A research function in development

Turning field experience into usable knowledge.

Wildlife Angel Institute is an emerging extension of WAI: a space for applied research, case studies, after-action reviews and practical frameworks. Its purpose is not to claim a settled doctrine, but to ask better questions about what makes conservation systems effective and durable.

Contact

Every mandate begins with context.

Tell us what you are trying to protect, what is getting in the way and what you already know. The first conversation is for understanding the situation, not selling a predefined solution.
